New for the Fall of 2023, Simi Institute for Careers & Education is launching our new Carpentry Trades Program. Three sequential classes, for approximately 500 hours of instruction, will prepare students for a career in Carpentry, or to transition to the Southwest and Mountain State Carpentry Guild to progress in the traditional guild model (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Construction I is a concentrator course in the Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway leading to two of three required certificates of completion for direct admittance into the Carpenters International Training Fund (CITF) pre-apprenticeship program. The course integrates academic skills with practical application allowing students to explore career options in the Building and Construction industry, while developing a foundation of industry-specific skills and concepts. 

CURRICULUM

Through inquiry-based learning and highly engaging hands on activities, students enrolled in Construction I, will engage in an overview of the importance of safety on the job site, while gaining practical experience in measuring and marking, blueprint reading, estimating construction cost, as well as, the use of layout, framing, and common hand and power tools. Students will explore and further develop these skills through projects such as building a sawhorse, picnic table, skateboard ramp, and shed.

Construction II

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Construction II, is a capstone course in the Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway leading to the third of three required certificates of completion for direct admittance into the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund (SWCTF) pre-apprenticeship program. The course integrates academic skills with practical application allowing students to analyze and evaluate career options in the Building and Construction Industry, while further developing the specific skills and concepts required of those who work in the industry.

CURRICULUM

Through inquiry-based learning and highly engaging hands on activities, students enrolled in Construction II, will identify and demonstrate the importance of safety on the job site, while gaining practical experience and mastery in commercial and residential concepts, print interpretation, site layout, footing and foundation forms, wall framing, ceiling and roof framing, installing light-gauge metal framing, installing and finishing drywall, installing windows, doors, and hardware, installing acoustical ceilings, floor layout and installation, sheathing and barriers, and finishing.
